Indian Government Strikes Out Over 200 Betting and Loan Apps To Protect Users

The Indian Government has banned over 200 betting and loan apps, which are said to have Chinese connections, to protect user privacy and security.

A new 200 apps are banned in India!

According to Prasar Bharti News Services and Digital Platforms’ Twitter account, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) moved on an urgent and emergency basis.

According to Section 69 of the Information Technology Law, this was done to maintain the country’s integrity and privacy. According to ANI, this move results from complaints filed by users harassed by the people behind the various mobile lending apps for failing to pay their debts on time. Those apps lure people into applying for loans. Still, they charge high-interest rates, often making it difficult for them to repay.

Six months ago, the MHA investigated 28 loan apps and found that 94 were working with third-party links, which led to people committing suicide.

As a result of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI)’s recently released guidelines for digital lending firms, betting, and loan apps have been banned in India. According to these guidelines, lending firms cannot increase credit limits without users’ permission, and lending apps must obtain permission before acquiring any data.

MeitY or the Ministry of Home Affairs have not commented on the names of the banned apps.

If you don’t know, India has frequently banned apps related to China. The Government banned apps like TikTok in June 2020. PUBG Mobile, WeChat, and more were eventually banned, with the list growing in the same year. Over 50 apps were banned last year, including Garena Free Fire, Beauty Camera, Viva Video Editor, App Lock, and more.
