GTA 5 Switch Port Is Dead: Take-Two Takes Down Modders’ Project

The unofficial GTA 5 Nintendo Switch port is coming to an end after legal action from Take-Two Interactive, according to the project’s lead developer, M0jso. Paralympics Productions, the group behind the port, plans to shut down on October 3, 2026.

The shutdown ends one of the most unusual GTA 5 modding projects of 2026. The team had spent months adapting Grand Theft Auto V to run natively on the original Nintendo Switch. An unfinished Android port was also in development.

This was never an official Rockstar Games release. GTA 5 has official versions for PlayStation, Xbox, and PC, while Nintendo Switch and Android never received a native release. Rockstar’s new modding rules also prohibit moving its games to platforms where it has never officially released them.

Why the GTA 5 Switch Port Is Shutting Down

M0jso announced the closure on September 28 in a post on X. The developer thanked supporters, apologized for ending the project, and said the shutdown was definitive. The post said, “Paralympics Productions is shutting down on October 3.”

M0jso also said Take-Two had shown “mercy” and later said he probably would not win if the dispute reached court.

Take-Two has not published a detailed public explanation of the case in the sources reviewed here. So it is more accurate to describe a shutdown after reported legal action than to present an unpublished legal document as fact.

A frame-rate patch did not kill the mod. The lawyers got the final boss fight.

What Was the GTA 5 Nintendo Switch Port?

Paralympics Productions aimed to make GTA 5 run directly on Nintendo’s original Switch hardware.

That approach made the project very different from simply streaming GTA 5 from a PC or using a compatibility layer. Tom’s Hardware and VideoCardz reported that the build was recompiled for the ARM-based Tegra X1 processor and ran directly through Nintendo’s Horizon operating system.

The project used the GTA V Legacy branch associated with the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC versions. Reports also said the work relied on source code from a 2023 GTA V leak.

The modders had to compress assets and tune settings to fit the Switch. They also faced tight memory and performance limits. Tom’s Hardware reported that the Switch’s 4GB memory required extensive asset compression during the porting process.

How Well Did GTA 5 Run on Switch?

The port was a technical experiment, not a polished commercial release.

Tom’s Hardware reported frame rates in the roughly 10 to 25 FPS range on standard Switch hardware, with performance improving when the console ran at higher clock speeds. Around 30 FPS was possible in lighter situations with overclocking, although demanding scenes could still cause drops.

The project also needed modified Hardware. That meant ordinary Switch owners couldn’t simply download the port from the Nintendo eShop and start playing.

The results showed the difference between proving that something can run and shipping a stable game for millions of players.

Rockstar’s New Modding Rules Add Important Context

The timing of the shutdown stands out because Rockstar updated its public modding guidelines in September 2026. Rockstar’s current guidelines directly restrict modifying its games to run on consoles, hardware devices, or other platforms where Rockstar has not officially released them.

The rules also cover story changes, cross-game projects, multiplayer modding, intellectual property, and interference with Rockstar’s online services.

That does not prove the guideline caused the shutdown. Rockstar’s page does not name Paralympics Productions or announce a takedown.

Still, the rule directly covers the type of work the team was doing. The GTA 5 Switch port targeted a platform that never received an official Rockstar release.

The Android Port Is Dead Too

The Switch project was not the only Paralympics Productions effort affected by the shutdown.

M0jso also worked on a native GTA 5 Android port. Reports described it as a separate project aimed at running the game directly on ARM-based mobile Hardware rather than launching the Windows PC build through tools such as Winlator.

A native port requires the game to run directly on Android hardware and software. That is a deeper engineering job than running the PC version through a compatibility layer.

But development will not continue. Paralympics Productions’ shutdown means the unfinished Android version will end with the rest of the project.

What About GTA Online?

This part needs careful wording because online features became part of the community discussion around the project. Still, there is no evidence that Paralympics Productions created an official or fully functioning GTA Online version for Switch.

The project also sparked discussion about a paid online mode. That would have raised extra legal and commercial questions because Rockstar operates GTA Online as an official service.

Take-Two’s latest financial reporting lists Grand Theft Auto Online and Grand Theft Auto V among the largest contributors to its Net Bookings. That doesn’t explain why the company acted against this project, but it does show the franchise’s commercial importance.

A paid fan multiplayer service would raise questions beyond performance modding.

Why This Matters for GTA 5 Modding

The shutdown reminds us that “possible” and “permitted” are very different in game modding.

A talented team can solve the engineering problem and still face a rights issue. The GTA 5 Switch port proved that a heavily modified original Switch could run the game through native code, but that did not turn the project into an official product.

Rockstar’s new rules also give creators a clearer line to consider before starting large projects. Unsupported platform ports now sit directly inside a written restriction.

It does not end fan experimentation, but it makes some large projects harder to pursue openly when they use Rockstar games, code, assets, or services.

What Happens Next?

Paralympics Productions is scheduled to close on October 3, 2026, based on M0jso’s announcement.

No official announcement has confirmed an authorized GTA 5 Nintendo Switch release. Take-Two’s current lineup lists Grand Theft Auto VI for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S on November 19, 2026.

That leaves the GTA 5 Switch port as an unofficial community project rather than a supported Nintendo version.

Rockstar has not announced a native Android edition of GTA V, so the unfinished Paralympics Productions build will not become an official mobile release.

GTA 5 Switch Port: What We Know

Paralympics Productions built an unofficial native GTA 5 port for the original Nintendo Switch. The project ran on modified Hardware and adapted GTA V for Nintendo’s ARM-based console.

M0jso announced that the group would shut down on October 3 after legal action involving Take-Two. The unfinished Android port will end as well.

Rockstar’s September 2026 modding guidelines explicitly restrict moving its games to unsupported platforms.

So yes, the GTA 5 Switch port is dead. It was never an official Rockstar game, and the public evidence currently points to a legal shutdown rather than a development failure.

For players, that means the dream of an official GTA 5 Switch release remains separate from this project. For modders, the message is much clearer: getting GTA running somewhere Rockstar never shipped it can be a very different challenge from keeping that project alive.

That distinction matters for readers looking for a Switch version of GTA 5. This project showed what modders could achieve, but it never changed Rockstar’s official platform support.
