Xiaomi Smartwatch: No solid plans, but thinking about it and looking for inputs from the community says Barra

Xiaomi has proven its mettle as far as making smartphones goes. But it is not just stopping there, and it is expected that the Chinese phone maker is now keen to manufacture a smartwatch.

After being the third-largest smartphone vendor in the world for this quarter, the company wants to enter the smartwatch arena. But unlike other companies such as Samsung, LG, Motorola and Asus who have already released their own wearables to the public, Xiaomi is trying out a different path.

Xiaomi’s global vice president, Hugo Barra, said in a YouTube video that, “You’d be absolutely amazed if you’d see all the things that we experiment with here at Xiaomi”.

Barra hasn’t officially put a word out, whether the company is into smartwatch production or not. But he wants consumer feedback on what they would want to see in a smartwatch, if the company was to build one. Based on suggestions, Xiaomi can consider building a smartwatch for their fans which could be affordable as well.

This isn’t the company’s first wearable device. Xiaomi has already been selling the Mi Band, a fitness band for a while now. Just like most of the fitness trackers in the market, it tracks user movements and also sleeping patterns. Another interesting feature is its ability to unlock a device. It is also said to be water-resistant.

Apart from smartwatches, the company is also working on a 4G LTE smartphone which could be priced for an approximate Rs 4,020 making it cheaper than the RedMi 1S.
