Nexus 6: Here’s all you need to know about Google’s new flagship smartphone

No, the company has neither ditched the Nexus lineup for Android Silver yet, nor it has named the next-gen device “X”. Putting an end to all the rumours and speculations, Google has finally pulled the wraps off the Nexus 6, Google’s 2014 flagship smartphone that runs the latest, stock Android OS. At a glance, the device looks promising — in fact it doesn’t come off as an affordable mid-ranger running stock OS, but a powerful premium high-end device. Let’s take a closer look at what the Motorola-built Nexus 6 is all about.

Design

In line with what we’ve previously seen from LG, Motorola has also tweaked the design to follow the Nexus lineup. Having said that, Motorola has added its own touch, and one may also find it a larger version of the Moto X. The all new Nexus 6 sports a curved design (like the new Moto X) and slim bezels. Its 159.2 x 82.3 x 10mm dimensions ensure that the device is well shaped to compete with the iPhone Plus and Galaxy Note 4. Over the years, the Nexus models have often faced user ire for its speakers. This time around, the Nexus 6 comes fitted with dual front facing stereo speakers.

Display
The highlight of the device is its gigantic 5.96-inch QHD display. However, there are fair chances that some people may diss it for such a mammoth sized display. The 2560 x 1440 (2K) native resolution ensures a pixel density of 493ppi. It should be noted that it brings in a larger display and resolution compared to iPhone 6 Plus.

Processing speed

The existing stiff competition from Samsung and Apple may have compelled Google to bring best-in class specs. This time around, Google has roped in the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 805 chipset comprising quad-core Krait 450 CPU clocked up to 2.7 GHz per core. It also includes Adreno 420 GPU. With this, it is at par with Samsung’s Galaxy 5, but quite ahead of others like HTC One M8, Moto X that come with 801 chipset. All of this is backed by 3GB of RAM.

Camera

The Nexus 6 features a 13 megapixel sensor with integrated optical image stabilisation (OIS) and dual flash ‘ring’. For selfie lovers, it comes with a 2.1MP camera that is capable of 720p video

Android 5.0 Lollipop

Needless to say, it runs the latest Android 5.0 OS named Lollipop. Some of the features include the new notifications, Material Design, Android Runtime (ART), better battery performance and more. Here’s all you need to know about Android 5.0 Lollipop.

Battery

Another aspect of the Nexus line that has received user criticism is battery life. The Nexus 6 has tried to fix the issue to a great extent with the 3220mAh battery (considerably larger than Nexus 5 and similar to Galaxy Note 4). It runs Android Lollipop that further promises to spruce up the battery performance

Price and availability

The Nexus 6 will be available in 32GB and 64GB storage capacities. The pre-orders for the devices will start later this month. The Google Nexus is likely to be priced at $649 for a contract-free variant.
