A new interview with PlayStation’s Hideaki Nishino has sparked speculation about the next generation of PlayStation hardware. He didn’t confirm any new entries in the lineup, but several fans took his comments as a hint of a much-anticipated PS Vita 2. Others would like to see a mobile setup that embraces the versatility that has made the Nintendo Switch so popular.
Sony’s move to drop the physical game disc for PlayStation also has an impact on the PlayStation 6 discussion. Many gamers now wonder what there could be to distinguish the future console from a high-powered gaming PC. A more interesting (and underrated) one is a purpose-built console for home use that can be carried around and run PlayStation games outside the living room. It would be a true portable version of the game that doesn’t require a stable Internet connection, unlike the PlayStation Portal, which relies on game streaming.
Ps Vita 2: The idea has been brewing in people’s minds for a long time. In early 2024, the hardware insider Moore’s Law Is Dead reported that Sony was testing a new device nicknamed “PlayStation Vita 2. The hardware insider Moore’s Law Is Dead claimed that early this year, Sony was working on a new device they dubbed a “PS Vita 2. In their own words, the handheld would be released with the next generation of PlayStation consoles and run PlayStation games without any modifications. This would allow actual games to be played on flights, in cars, on trains, or anywhere streaming is not as responsive as desired. There’s a lot of excitement about this trend on Reddit. Users envision a seamless experience, with a digital game library that can easily move between desktop and portable consoles, much like the Nintendo Switch.
Another boost came from Hideaki Nishino’s interview with the Japanese gaming website Famitsu. In the interview, he said that future PlayStation technologies may appear in “various forms and in various places,” suggesting they could be found across more hardware categories. He also mentioned the rise in “pick-up-and-play” experiences, which cater to a different type of player these days, one who appreciates quick, easy access.
While Nishino did not make an official announcement about a PS Vita 2 handheld platform, his comments align with the trajectory suggested by ongoing industry speculation. Sony’s efforts to make dedicated portable equipment are unlikely to be made public for a long time if they are indeed preparing such equipment. With the PS6’s arrival still in the distant future – around 2028 at this point – it has left PS6 fans plenty to look forward to as the company continues to keep its long-term plans close to its chest.
