Sony Raises PS5 Prices in Southeast Asia – Will India Be Next?

Out of nowhere, Sony shifted how much it charges for the PlayStation 5 in parts of Southeast Asia – changes kick in on May 1. The firm hasn’t given any official reason. Still, forces at play point toward tight supplies of DRAM and NAND chips, pushing costs up behind the scenes.

Right now, prices in India haven’t changed as a result of this move. Even so, since shifts like these have already happened in places like the U.S., Britain, parts of Europe, and Japan, acting as if India won’t be affected isn’t wise. Changes here could appear earlier than most think.

Revised PS5 Pricing Across Southeast Asia

Sony’s recalibration spans six countries, each reflecting varied increments across console variants and accessories.

Singapore

  • PlayStation 5: SGD 849
  • PS5 Digital Edition: SGD 764
  • PS5 Pro: SGD 1,167
  • PS Portal Remote Player: SGD 347

Malaysia

  • PlayStation 5: MYR 2,799
  • PS5 Digital Edition: MYR 2,499
  • PS5 Pro: MYR 3,999
  • PS Portal Remote Player: MYR 1,099

Thailand

  • PlayStation 5: THB 20,990
  • PS5 Digital Edition: THB 18,790
  • PS5 Pro: THB 30,990
  • PS Portal Remote Player: THB 8,380

Indonesia

  • PlayStation 5: IDR 11,399,000
  • PS5 Digital Edition: IDR 9,999,000
  • PS Portal Remote Player: IDR 5,199,000

Philippines

  • PS5: PHP 40,032

Vietnam

  • PS5: VND 16,900,000

The escalation is far from uniform. The Philippines appears to bear the heaviest burden, with prices vaulting upward by nearly 30 percent. Vietnam trails closely with a 27 percent rise. Indonesia, however, presents a different spectacle altogether, particularly with the PlayStation Portal, which has surged by an eye-catching 44.5 percent.

The Invisible Hand: Memory Shortages Reshaping the Market

Beneath these pricing shifts lies a deeper structural tension within the global semiconductor ecosystem. DRAM and NAND memory, foundational to modern electronics, are currently entangled in a supply bottleneck that extends well beyond gaming consoles.

Smartphones, laptops, and an array of connected devices now compete within a tightening corridor of availability. Reports indicate that this imbalance is not fleeting. Projections suggest that supply constraints may persist until around 2027, with production meeting only about 60 percent of global demand.

A significant contributor to this imbalance is the industry’s pivot toward high-bandwidth memory (HBM). As artificial intelligence infrastructure expands at a relentless pace, manufacturers are channeling resources toward HBM due to its superior margins. The consequence is a thinning supply of conventional memory components that power everyday devices.

This reallocation creates a domino effect. Device manufacturers are left vying for a diminished pool of resources, pushing costs upward in a quiet yet persistent climb. By early 2026, memory prices are estimated to have leapt nearly 90 percent quarter-on-quarter. This surge cannot be easily absorbed.

Why PlayStation 5 Prices Rose Instead of Specs Falling

When production costs rise, brands typically face a crossroads: either dilute specifications or raise prices. Sony has chosen the latter path. The PlayStation 5’s hardware integrity remains intact, but the financial burden has shifted to consumers.

In essence, what we are witnessing is not merely a regional price adjustment but a reflection of a broader tectonic shift in the technology supply chain. The PlayStation 5 is simply one visible node in a much larger network of strain.

What This Means for India

India’s current pricing stability may prove temporary. Given the cascading adjustments across global markets, it is less a question of “if” and more of “when.” Should the memory market remain constricted, a similar recalibration in India would not be surprising.

For now, the window remains open. Whether it stays that way depends largely on forces far removed from storefront shelves.
