Nokia brand steps down, Microsoft takes control of the Lumia Series
It seems like Microsoft is finally making some changes as far as its Nokia acquisition goes. Close on the heels of shutting down the Nokia plant in Chennai, there is another significant change coming your way. Your favorite Nokia Lumia phone branding is being ditched and all future smartphones will be called ‘Microsoft Lumia’.
The company has finally made it official that it is in fact, ditching the brand name Nokia for their Lumia devices and will now be recognised as Microsoft itself. According to The Verge, the name change followed a slow transition from Nokia.com over to Microsoft’s new mobile site, and Nokia France will be the first of many countries that adopt ‘Microsoft Lumia’ for its Facebook, Twitter, and other social media accounts. Microsoft has confirmed to The Verge that other countries will follow the re-branding steps in the coming weeks.
Even though the brand is being taken over by Microsoft for the Lumia devices, Nokia will continue to be a part of the company but without the smartphone business now. The Finnish company will continue focusing on mapping and network infrastructure. Changes will begin from France and will then have the global roll out in the coming weeks.
Not much was voiced by the company in terms of what their plan or strategy is, or what significant improvements they will make to the devices. Though, this change was quite obvious and was predicted by many. The Lumia 830 may be the last phone to carry the Nokia name and you can expect some serious name changes following.
Windows hasn’t been able to capture the market in India the way Android has or even iOS for that matter. It would be interesting to see what the tech-giant is capable of doing to the Lumia brand. Are they planning on changing the device completely? Only time will tell.
