Corning to build 3D Gorilla Glass for curved displays

Two of the popular upcoming trends of 2014 appear to be curved displays for smartphones and wearables. Keeping this mind, Corning – popular for its Gorilla Glass display protection – has announced that it will soon start manufacturing 3D Gorilla Glass for the curved form factor.

It is working with G-Tech Optoelectronics (GTOC) to establish a vertically integrated operation in Taiwan. “We can now take Gorilla Glass all the way from flat sheet to a finished 3D-shaped product in Asia, expediting turnaround times and minimizing logistical complexity,” said James R. Steiner, senior vice president and general manager, Corning Specialty Materials. “That’s a win for Corning and our customers.

Gorilla Glass protection for wearables too

The 3D-forming technology is capable of achieving higher tolerances and high throughput on a platform that is more economical than alternative two-mold forming methods, says the company. This technology will use Gorilla Glass of uniform thickness, assisting designers to introduce thinner and lighter devices and leverage the emergence of conformable displays for mobile and wearable applications.

Corning’s Gorilla Glass is a scratch and damage resistant chemically strengthened glass that provides durability to mobile devices. Considering that giants like Samsung and LG are now looking at devices with curved display and wearables, Corning’s decision to build protection for these display panels seems to be just the right move.
