Coolpad today announced its Cool X Wide, the company’s first smartphone with a wide screen in a slab-style design. The Huawei Pura X View inspires this Android device but uses more affordable parts. A MediaTek Helio G99 chip and a TFT LCD screen let the manufacturer keep costs down.
A few days ago, reports surfaced that the pad was planning to release a cheap phone with a wide screen similar to Huawei phones. The company introduced the Coolpad Cool X Wide today, offering customers an alternative to the regular view.
Coolpad Cool X Wide Specifications and Features
The Coolpad Cool X Wide flaunts a 6.38-inch HD+ TFT LCD with a 90Hz refresh rate. The main highlight is the 16:10 aspect ratio, which makes the phone’s screen much wider than the usual tall smartphones we see today.
At 94.5mm, the phone is substantially wider than the standard 70-80mm width of contemporary smartphones. It borrows its design language from the Huawei Pura X View, which is part of China’s latest wave of interestingly proportioned phones.
MediaTek Helio G99 chipset, coupled with LPDDR4X RAM and UFS 2.2 storage, powers the Cool X Wide. It will offer three memory configurations, though it is yet to be revealed what they are. A microSD card can expand storage by up to 256GB.
The rear camera set includes a 50MP main camera and a macro lens for up-close and personal shots. Coolpad has yet to announce the front-camera specifications, so prospective buyers will have to wait to see how good (or bad) selfies and video calls will be.
A 4,600mAh battery with 18W charging will power the phone. While 18W charging may seem a bit slow, the larger battery should last a decent amount of time before needing a recharge. How long that lasts depends on how you use the phone.
Coolpad Cool X Wide Price and Availability
The Coolpad Cool X Wide is now available for pre-order on JD.com in China. After discounts, it starts at 999 Chinese yuan, equivalent to Rs 14,500. The company has not yet revealed the phone’s suggested retail price (SRP).
The smartphone will be available in three colors: White, Black and Red. There’s no information on the Cool X Wide’s international availability, so customers outside China will need to stay tuned for an official word on whether it will see a global launch.
