GTA 6 Vice City Campaign SHUT DOWN by Miami Sheriff

Miami-Dade officials floated an unusual promotional proposal involving Rockstar Games: temporarily rechristening Miami International Airport as “Vice City Airport” to create a marketing spectacle around GTA 6 while giving the city another avenue for publicity. The proposal, though, encountered an immediate roadblock.

Miami Sheriff Cordero-Stutz was against the idea of the rebirth of Miami as a video game world focused on crime and violence toward the police force. In her opinion, it would not be a good idea to be closely associated with GTA 6, as it would send the wrong message about Miami. However, the sheriff and her colleagues still have to deal with the crime issues in the county.

Miami Sheriff Rejects GTA 6 Vice City Rebranding Proposal

Sheriff Cordero-Stutz said GTA 6 portrays criminal conduct as central to its experience. Miami, meanwhile, faces the far less glamorous task of reducing actual crime. Turning the city into a real-life Vice City, therefore, could project an ill-fitting image rather than reinforce Miami’s accomplishments.

Commissioner Juan Carlos Bermudez echoed those reservations. He advocated highlighting Miami’s genuine achievements and those of the wider country instead of leaning on a fictional metropolis built around crime.

The rebranding concept reportedly originated from the mayor’s office, where officials saw commercial potential in the enormous attention surrounding GTA 6. With anticipation for Rockstar’s next Grand Theft Auto installment reaching extraordinary levels, a Vice City-themed airport could have generated substantial publicity for Miami.

Still, the sheriff’s objection carries weight. The Grand Theft Auto franchise has never portrayed law enforcement as the unquestioned hero. Players routinely find themselves pursued by police after committing increasingly serious offenses. At the same time, some law enforcement characters across the series have also been depicted as compromised or corrupt.

GTA 6 appears poised to preserve much of this familiar formula. The game reportedly introduces systems designed to make reckless violence less straightforward, including a Criminal Profiling system inspired by elements of Red Dead Redemption 2’s Honor system. Such mechanics could make players think twice before unleashing indiscriminate mayhem.

Yet the central premise remains unchanged. GTA 6 places players inside a fictional criminal world where illegal activity forms a major part of the gameplay loop.

A Missed Marketing Opportunity for Miami?

From a promotional standpoint, the Vice City rebranding proposal had obvious appeal. GTA 6’s Vice City draws heavily from Miami’s architecture, culture, streets, coastline, and broader visual identity. The connection between the fictional setting and the real city runs deeper than a simple name resemblance.

A public-facing partnership with Rockstar Games could also have transformed Miami into part of the game’s marketing conversation. With millions of players watching every GTA 6 development, even a temporary “Vice City Airport” identity could have attracted substantial global attention and potentially increased tourism interest.

Yet commercial opportunity doesn’t answer every question.

For Miami officials, the proposal sits at an awkward intersection between entertainment, tourism, civic branding, and public safety. For Rockstar Games, Vice City is a fictional playground built around crime. For Miami, crime is a real municipal challenge.

That distinction ultimately seems to have carried more weight than the promotional upside.

What do you think? Should Miami have embraced the GTA 6 connection and rebranded the airport as “Vice City Airport,” or did Miami Sheriff Cordero-Stutz make the right call?
