During the summer of 2025, online circles started to get whispers of new downloadable content for The Witcher 3. Initially, they were brushed off by most people. The assumption that a role-playing titan, who was ten years old already and placed in the shadow of an active sequel, would get something substantial to do was a borderline reckless assumption. Yet, the gossiping would not die. Instead, it thickened, drawing attention as independent voices strengthened the same assertion with extra details, all aimed at a 2026 release date.
The development of the 2026 Witcher 3 New DLC Talk

The explosion of speculation can be traced to Polish insider Borys Niepielak. In mid-2025, he proposed that Fools Theory, the studio in the midst of recreating The Witcher 1, had been secretly given another job. He also claimed the team was working on an expansion of The Witcher 3. This sequel was reportedly placed in the story between the third game and the yet-to-be-released Witcher 4 to provide a seamless transition between narratives and possibly make Geralt a backseat to Ciri. With that, having Ciri as a playable lead would seem less of a twist and more of a natural handover.
NieĹ›pielak also claimed the DLC would be revealed at The Game Awards. That reveal never happened. Normally, such a miss would ruin a rumor’s credibility. This time, it did not. The source remained trusted in Polish development circles. Curious commentary in CD Projekt RED’s financial report also fueled speculation.
During the same call, the company hinted at a new initiative targeting 2026. It stated that developments on certain projects could lead to new content. This might affect financial performance and enable incentive goals. The language was obscure. Even so, ‘new content’ hardly sounded like a full-scale game announcement. The majority of known projects are years away. Rumors of a Witcher 3 expansion fit neatly into this ambiguity.
Financial Analysts Put Petrol to the Fire
Momentum grew when Mateusz Chrzanowski of Noble Securities spoke up. Chrzanowski reported another paid Witcher 3 add-on in an April 2021 Reddit note. His estimates were bold. About 11 million copies sold at $30 each. The project had a budget of 52 million PLN. He believed this DLC would kick off the marketing campaign for Witcher 4. He also discussed future work, such as Project Orion and the Cyberpunk 2077 sequel, which reinforced his credibility.
By stepping back and looking at these pieces collectively, the puzzle falls into place in a way not previously anticipated. Consistent reports from domestic sources reinforce the likelihood, and from a promotional perspective, the strategy appears rational. Bringing back a popular brand would help rejuvenate enthusiasm, exactly as the next chapter is set to launch.
What Large Could This Growth be
Still, the scale remains a mystery. Will this addition match Blood and Wine’s scope, with its expanded open world and exploration? Or will CD Projekt RED choose a focused, streamlined expansion that keeps the story tight?
Age complicates matters. The Witcher 3 shows its years. Even at its initial release, the combat design and movie language were not groundbreaking, and time has not softened their roughness. The game is also based on REDengine, CD Projekt RED’s proprietary game development toolset, rather than more widely used engines like Unreal Engine. CD Projekt RED has since ceased using REDengine to make new Witcher games, now favoring Unreal Engine 5 for all future Witcher projects. Increasing the creation of new content within this older technical framework—REDengine—while the rest of the franchise moves forward, creates a tension that developers cannot overlook. It is yet to be determined whether that friction can result in minor mechanical improvements or a strictly conservative course of action.
Nevertheless, the possibility of new content has sparked discussion. The Witcher 3, even ten years on, keeps earning attention that few games can claim. If a new chapter does arrive in 2026, most players will, ultimately, face a simple question: Will you return to the Path when the call comes?
