Gecko Moria, wielder of the Kage Kage no Mi, once gave the Straw Hat Pirates one of their most brutal fights in the Thriller Bark arc. Though defeated, he never vanished from the story. His return has now become even more meaningful.
In One Piece chapter 1158, a huge reveal came through the cover story. Last week’s cover showed Yamato visiting the grave of a Wano hero. This man once stood against Kaido, but his body was never found. The latest chapter revealed his name to be Kozuki Moria. That means Gecko Moria is now confirmed as a member of the Kozuki clan.
This detail changes everything. Years ago, Moria fought Kaido and lost his entire crew. Now we learn it was part of a deeper past. Like Oden, Moria also fought Kaido to defend Wano. With this revelation, he is now linked by blood to Oden, Momonosuke, and the Kozuki family.
The clues were there all along. Oda’s wordplay gave hints. “Gecko” is the Kozuki kanji reversed, which translates to “moonlight.” It also explains how Moria accessed Ryuma’s corpse and stole Shusui, the blade once wielded by Zoro’s ancestor.

After his loss to Kaido, Moria sank into despair and ruled Thriller Bark. Fans last saw him at Hachinosu, where Perona helped him escape Blackbeard’s crew. But with this Kozuki link, his story may take a new turn.
The Kozuki clan created the Poneglyphs and passed down the skill to read them. If Moria inherited that ability, he could play a key role in the final saga. The Cross Guild, which lacks a Poneglyph reader, might bring him into their ranks.
Another theory suggests Moria could join forces with characters seen at Roger’s execution, such as Mihawk, Crocodile, Buggy, and Doflamingo. This would give Cross Guild the strength and knowledge it needs to stand against the Yonko.
Moria has long been seen as a fallen warrior. Now, Oda may be preparing his redemption. Whether fans call him Gecko Moria or Kozuki Moria, one fact is apparent: his role in One Piece has become more critical than ever.
Do you think Moria will rise again as a hero of Wano, or will he take a different path in the chaos ahead?
