E-commerce portal Flipkart, which hosted its ‘Big Billion Sale’ during between 13 and 17 October, saw a sale of more than $200 million worth of mobile phones with most consumers opting for 4G-enabled devices.

Ankit Nagori, Chief Business Officer, Flipkart, in a conversation with the Economic Times, said, “Mobile phones made up two-thirds of the $300 million worth of products purchased by consumers during the sale, which started on October 13. Flipkart sold 250 mobile phones every minute, of which 190 were 4G phones, during the five days.”

Nagori also shared that 4G-enabled smartphones were sold the most during the sale, and 80 percent of those were under the price tag of Rs 10,000. During the Diwali-special sale last year, the company sold $60 million worth of smartphones.

During the sale, the top selling smartphones were Lenovo K3 Note, Moto G3, Samsung Galaxy J5 and J7. According to Nagori, the demand for 4G handsets came mostly from Maharashtra, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Gujarat.

According to the report, Flipkart has sold 6 million 4G devices since such affordable devices entered the Indian market roughly 10 months ago. Approximately, 7-8 million smartphones are sold monthly in India.

Nagori added, “There’s a very large chunk of customers who are buying 4G phones because they want their phones to be future-ready, so even when 4G networks are not rolled out across the country, no one wants to buy an inferior phone.”
