Google has started rolling out the October 2026 Pixel update, which brings a few bug fixes to supported devices. It also marks the end of the road for one particularly popular pair of phones, as Google has finally stopped providing security updates for the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro.
Last month, the company pushed out the stable Android 17 QPR1 update alongside the September 2026 Pixel Drop. However, the October update appears to be a minor update that primarily addresses bugs. It does carry slightly more significance, though, as it will be the last major update for Google’s previous flagship phones.

Google Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro Reach End of Life Support
Google released the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro smartphones in October 2021. At launch, Google announced that the devices would receive five years of security updates. This means that the company will support the handsets until October 2026.
Google has already dropped the two smartphones from the Android 17 QPR2 beta list. This is an important sign that Google has prepared the end of the road for the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro. Android 17 QPR1 was the final feature update for the two handsets. As of this month, Android 17 QPR2 has been released to the public.
Android 17 QPR1 was the last software update that Google prepared for the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro. With the release of the latest quarterly platform update, the two smartphones have reached the end of their lifecycle.
That doesn’t mean the Pixel6 and Pixel 6 Pro are no longer useful. They can still retain their ordinary functions. However, after this year, Google will no longer provide security updates. So, if you use a Pixel 6 smartphone for online banking, work, or storing passwords, it may be time to think about an upgrade. Although the hardware is fine, the software has reached its end of life.
Google also said it will provide seven years of software updates for the new Pixel 11 and Pixel 11 Pro handsets. For this reason, if a Pixel 6 owner wants the security of seven years of updates on the new smartphones, it may be worth upgrading.
What Else Is New With the October 2026 Pixel Update?
The headline change is the end of support for the Pixel 6 series. Still, Google’s October 2026 release also addresses three specific problems affecting newer Pixel devices.
Keyboard Fix
Google has fixed a glitch that could prevent the on-screen keyboard from appearing after users tap certain search fields.
The problem affects the Pixel 8, Pixel 9, Pixel 10, and Pixel 11 series.
It is a small annoyance on paper, but one that can quickly become frustrating when a basic search box refuses to summon the keyboard.
Audio Fix
The update also addresses an audio issue that could cause unwanted noise or distortion in ringtones during certain VoIP calls.
Apps such as WhatsApp can trigger this calling behavior, and the issue affects the Pixel 8, Pixel 9, and Pixel 10 series.
Google’s fix should eliminate the affected ringtone distortion for supported devices.
Camera Fix
Pixel 11 series owners receive a separate camera-related correction.
Google has addressed a problem that could cause captured photos and videos to be stored with the wrong orientation. Instead of manually correcting the rotation afterward, affected users should now see their media saved in the expected orientation.
How to Install the October 2026 Pixel Update
If the update has reached your device, you can check for it manually through the phone’s software-update menu.
Go to:
Settings → System → Software updates → System update
If you own a Pixel 6 or Pixel 6 Pro, the October 2026 release marks the final chapter of Google’s promised security-support period for your phone. The handset itself won’t become obsolete overnight, but Google will no longer include future security coverage.
