Sony PlayStation 5 Will Soon Support Variable Refresh Rate

Sony has revealed that variable refresh rate (VRR) support, which it has been aiming to include for quite some time, will finally make its way to the PlayStation 5 in the coming months. No specific debut date has been announced, however, the business has stated that it will be available shortly. In addition, an update for the PS5 and PS4 has been released, which includes a few additional features. Here are all the specifics.

VRR Support for Sony PS5 Is Coming Soon

Before we get into the specifics of what’s to come, let’s have a look at the VRR section. The variable refresh rate function on the Sony PlayStation 5 will operate with compatible TVs and monitors through HDMI 2.1. For those who are unaware, VRR will alter the refresh rate dependent on the visual output of the PS5. It will improve aesthetics, minimise input latency, and eliminate screen difficulties such as screen tearing and frame pacing.

This functionality will work with a variety of games. While new games will support it at launch, old and existing ones will soon receive support via an update. Sony will offer a new option to boost the visual quality of games that do not support VRR. However, there is a risk that the games could encounter some troubles, thus there is an option to disable VRR as well.

Sony PS5, PS4 Update Information

Back to what PS5 and PS4 players will receive today, Sony is adding certain “fan-requested” features to both game platforms. On the PS4 and PS5, this includes the option for players to join both Open and Closed Parties. While Open Parties are open to everybody, Closed Parties require an invitation. On PS5, there will be new Game Base and Trophy card improvements, as well as modifications to the mono audio for headphones.

Users in the United States and the United Kingdom will also be able to test a Voice Command feature on the PlayStation 5, which will allow users to use voice commands to quickly access apps, settings, and other features on their PlayStation 5.

The PS and PS Remote Play applications have also received some enhancements from the firm. Users of the PS app will be able to join Open and Closed Parties directly from the PS App, and the PS App Game Base UI has been overhauled to allow users to quickly discover friends, chat features, and more.
